In this video blog, Christina, a psychotherapist, addresses the challenges of parenting after trauma. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) impact a person’s ability to parent, leading to conditions like Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD). Christina discusses the manifestations of unresolved trauma in parenting. These include avoidance behaviors and overprotection, which can hinder a child’s emotional development and lead to attachment issues. When parents struggle to regulate their emotions, their children can develop anxious and avoidant attachment behaviors.
There are many strategies for engaging in mindful parenting after experiencing trauma such as, reparenting yourself, being honest with what happened in your past, not blaming your parents, and seeking professional support. Christina reassures viewers that struggling with unresolved trauma does not equate to failure as a parent. Parents do not have to be perfect to meed a child’s needs.
