How to Manage Social Anxiety Part 1 [Video]

experiencing social anxiety

In this video, psychotherapist Joe Walz presents the first of a three-part series about how to manage social anxiety. This involves feelings of fear, nervousness, or discomfort during or before interactions. Common triggers include situations like public speaking, meeting new people, or being the center of attention. While social anxiety is a normal and even helpful response that can motivate us to perform well in meaningful situations, it can become problematic when it is too intense or disproportionate, potentially leading to avoidance and interfering with daily life. In more severe cases, it may develop into social anxiety disorder.

Symptoms can be physical (such as sweating, rapid heartbeat, or dizziness), mental and emotional (including excessive self-consciousness and fear of judgment), and behavioral (like avoiding social situations or relying on substances to cope). The causes are a mix of genetic and environmental factors. This includes family history, learned behaviors, early negative social experiences, and brain activity, particularly involving the amygdala, which regulates fear responses. Part 2 will cover effective management strategies.
