Healthy Narcissism:
Why a Little Self-Focus Can Be Good For You
In this video, psychotherapist Maddie McAllister explores the concept of healthy narcissism. Narcissism exists on a spectrum from healthy to pathological. Although only a small portion of people have severe narcissism or narcissistic personality disorder, people often use the term “narcissism” too loosely. Narcissism relates to self-esteem and ego. It shows how our external world, including relationships, career success, and self-perception, influences our inner feelings.

Pathological narcissism involves an excessive need for admiration and external validation, leading to inflated self-worth and challenging relationships. Conversely, a lack of narcissism may leave individuals unable to celebrate their successes or feel supported by others. Healthy narcissism is important because individuals can acknowledge their strengths and take pride in their achievements. It allows people to feel secure in themselves, enjoy balanced relationships, and celebrate both their own and others’ successes.
