Although lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals share some universal issues, their particular concerns are unique. Many LGBTQ individuals feel more comfortable with a gay therapist or gay affirmative therapist who is both familiar with these issues and accepting, supportive and encouraging during treatment.
At myTherapyNYC, all of our therapists provide gay affirmative counseling and LGBT Counseling. We share in the belief that there is nothing inherently wrong with being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. We provide a safe environment for LGBTQ clients and are prepared to address the complexities facing this community.
For some individuals, sexual orientation and identity issues may be the cause for depression, anxiety and other emotional stressors. We will be sure to address this in our work together. Others may wish to focus on other issues, such as trauma, but still work with an understanding, nonjudgmental therapist. Either way, we will work jointly with you to focus on your specific individual needs and life problems.
While a member of the LGBTQ community can certainly work with any therapist, working with a therapist who understands, both personally and professionally, some of what you’re experiencing can be extremely validating. You can feel safe to be your full self, without fear of judgment.
We offer same-sex couples counseling for those who wish to work through issues in their relationships or strengthen an already solid foundation.

Yes! Many of our therapists are specifically trained to work with transgender clients. Whether you are questioning your gender identity, going through the process of transitioning or struggling to navigate the world as a trans individual, your therapist will be affirmative of your identity and supportive at every step along the way.
Our therapists understand the issues that come up when someone is living with HIV, and we can help you adjust to life with the disease, cope with symptoms of depression and/or anxiety, plan ways to disclose your status and more.
We believe that sexuality exists on a spectrum, and every individual falls somewhere on that spectrum. Because sexuality is not black and white, we respect each individual’s sexual orientation, and we hold no judgments toward anyone who identifies as bisexual.
We deeply respect where each person is in their journey, and if you’re not out or ready to come out, that’s okay. Your therapist will support you and guide you with compassion and understanding, not push you or rush your coming out. Your journey is yours.
Yes! Our therapists hold a nonjudgmental attitude toward sexual habits. Whether you have one sexual partner or many (or if you are looking for a partner with your same preferences), we can help you clarify what a healthy dynamic looks like for you. In sessions, you can also share your kinks and figure out how to best incorporate them into your sex life and relationships. We are fully supportive of your needs and overall wellbeing.
Yes! Our therapists are familiar with non-traditional relationship structures. We understand how open relationships, polyamorous relationships and other non-monogamous relationships work, including their unique challenges, and we will be sensitive to those during same-sex couples counseling, relationship counseling and/or individual counseling.
