Joseph Walz (he/him/his) believes the alliance formed between client and therapist is one of the most important factors impacting a client’s success. Joe strives to cultivate a warm, welcoming, and safe environment in which each client feels supported and empowered and where they can examine the client’s concerns and seek solutions together. Through empathetic collaboration, Joe works with his clients to explore the past and the present to help them better understand themselves along with where they are, where they’ve been, and where they want to go.
Before transitioning into a career in the mental health field, Joe amassed a variety of experiences that inform his therapeutic approach and helped him cultivate a compassion for and curiosity about other people. Working as a public defender, Joe was able to provide support and guidance to a wide variety of people facing some of the most challenging moments in their lives. As a law professor and academic-support counselor, Joe counseled and coached students through the incredibly stressful demands of their legal education and preparation for the Bar Exam. While working in the entertainment industry, Joe cultivated a deep appreciation for the power and value of creativity, narrative, practice, and cooperation. Joe’s experience working with a variety of populations and challenges has helped him form a comfort and eagerness to assist any client with whatever struggle or concern they are facing.
Joe is committed to tailoring his therapeutic approach to the unique and personal characteristics, cultures, experiences, needs, and values of each client. He works from an integrative approach incorporating techniques from a variety of therapeutic modalities, including CBT, mindfulness, Psychodynamic, and Relational therapies. Joe believes in a nonjudgmental approach to therapy with a strong focus on helping clients utilize and build upon the strengths they already possess.
