Grief Bereavement Group in NYC

Good Mourning: A Bereavement Group in NYC

Are you struggling to cope with the death of a loved one? Grief is a complex and often isolating experience, and it can be challenging to navigate the difficult emotions that may arise. If you are interested in receiving additional support around your grief, we hope you will consider joining a bereavement support group at myTherapyNYC. We will be launching our next group in Winter 2023.

This is a time-limited support group for people who are struggling with the death of a loved one. The format for the group is based on the Meaning in Loss Group, developed by Dr. Robert Neimeyer. It is designed to give participants the opportunity to explore their “story of loss” — the story of your person who has died, your relationship with them, and the life you live now.

You may have questions or
concerns about our bereavement group...

This is a short-term group structured to help those who have lost loved ones (family members, partners, close friends, etc.) by giving them space to discover and share their story of loss. In this group, there will be opportunities to explore your story of loss through group discussions, one-on-one conversations with other participants, and small personal activities between sessions.

This support group is intended for people who have had a loved one die and find it difficult to live a normal life after the loss. If you find yourself thinking constantly about the loved one and it’s difficult to work, sleep, eat, or spend time with others, this group will help provide support as you navigate the loss and to discover the life you want to live following the loss of your loved one.

This group is designed to run for 8 weeks, and we ask that you miss no more than one meeting and that you let us know the week prior if you plan to be away. Because this group involves a lot of one-on-one sharing, it’s important for the group facilitators to know who will be in attendance so we can plan accordingly.

Each group member will have the opportunity to meet with the group therapist for a private initial meeting prior to the start of the group. This initial meeting provides an opportunity to address immediate concerns and generally alleviates some of the anxiety and discomfort that can occur when entering into a group. Consistent attendance and participation in the group also allow for members to get to know one another and develop trust through group sessions. Many find that meeting with others who are experiencing similar issues can be comforting, and this often sets the stage for discussing one’s own difficulties among familiar faces.

Contact us for a free 15-minute phone consultation. Before you join the group, we would have an individual initial session to assess if the group is right for you.
