Reiki 101: Quick Tips For Checking In With Your Chakras

Many forms of energy work have emerged into the mainstream in recent years, including acupuncture and biofeedback. Reiki, a Japanese natural healing technique, is also a form of energy work that focuses on releasing, moving, or adding energy to points on the body called chakras. Many people have heard of chakras but don’t really understand their purpose. Are they mystical wheels of light emitting colored rays out into the universe? Do you have to be a yogi in a deep meditative state to tap into these force fields? As a Certified Reiki Master working with clients for over 7 years, I have found that everyone–including the skeptics and individuals with no prior esoteric study–can feel their own energy centers with proper guidance.

There are over one hundred minor chakras located in various places on the body, but there are 7 main chakras that allow us to take in energy from the outside world as well as send our energy out into world. Chakras are the inflow and outflow points to our energetic ‘piping system’. This is not a belief but an actual scientific fact. Our bodies are surrounded by an electromagnetic field, measured in Hertz, that is created by frequencies at an atomic level. Our electrons and protons, in constant motion, create a vibration that is a blue print of our physical, mental and emotional states. Reiki practitioners are able to measure and feel these vibrations, detecting if the energetic points are clogged or flowing. The goal of Reiki is to restore balance to the energy system which may be burdened due to stress, physical illness, toxicity, emotional discomfort, anxiety, trauma, etc.

The 7 main chakras include: the crown chakra, third eye, throat chakra, heart chakra, solar plexus, sacral chakra, and base (or root) chakra.  Each of these chakras correlate to the physical body as well as our current emotional state.

A Few Tips to Get Your Energy Flowing:

Crown ChakraLocated at the top of the head, this chakra is our connection to the universe at large. When we feel connected to everyone and everything, instead of feeling like we are on the journey alone, then our crown chakra is flowing!

Tip: When you feel the weight of having to BE the universe, visualize white light entering your whole body from above your head. The universe is a vast well of energy that we can partner with and draw energetic support from. You are never alone, but we have free will, so we must allow the universal energy (chi) to enter. This helps us to practice being receptive, instead of always sending our energy out to others. Pulling in energy at chakra points is parallel to eating and drinking; we must nourish ourselves energetically as well.

Third Eye:  Located at the forehead, this chakra is our psychic center where we visualize what we want to manifest in life. You have to imagine the dream before you make it happen! We send the vision out or receive the pictures in our mind (inspiration). This is also where we hold trauma in picture form.

Tip: Cancel out any negative images that pop in your mind out of fear and replace them with a picture of what you really want to happen. The tricky part is catching the fear based image when you are visualizing it (which could be from the past or a projection of the future.) Awareness is the first step to change. Say ‘cancel’ in your mind and conjure up a new beauty. This vibration gets sent out like a radio wave frequency and what you desire is more likely to be attracted to you.
